Install CNCRemote Server
CNC Remote works with CNCRemote Server, a small program that runs on the computer or Raspberry Pi connected to your machine by USB. It is free.
Pick the computer that stays next to your machine:
The app shows these same steps: when it finds no server, choose how to install one.
Raspberry Pi
For a Raspberry Pi 3, 4, 5 or Zero 2 W dedicated to the machine, with nothing to type.
- On a computer with an SD card reader, install Raspberry Pi Imager.
- In Imager, open App Options › Content Repository › Use custom URL, and paste this address:
https://update.cncremote.pierreramoin.com/rpi-imager.json - Choose your Raspberry Pi, then CNCRemote Server, then your SD card.
- When Imager offers to customise, enter your Wi-Fi: the same network as your iPhone, iPad or Mac. Or plug the Pi into Ethernet. You can also set its host name: it becomes the machine's name in the app.
- Put the card in the Pi, plug in your machine's USB cable and power it on. A few minutes later it appears in the app, ready to pair.
No Content Repository option in Imager? Download the image, choose Use custom in Imager, and plug the Pi into Ethernet.
Mac
- Download CNCRemote Server: for a Mac with Apple silicon (M1 or later) or for a Mac with an Intel processor.
- Open the downloaded file and drag CNCRemote Server onto Applications.
- Open CNCRemote Server from Applications. It has no window: its icon appears in the menu bar, at the top right of the screen.
- When macOS asks whether it may find devices on your local network, click Allow.
- Plug your machine into the Mac with its USB cable, then open CNC Remote on your iPhone or iPad: the Mac appears in the list.
The icon's menu shows the server's state, restarts it, opens the pairing window, shows the logs and chooses whether it opens when you log in. While the machine runs a program, restarting and quitting are refused: stop the program from the app first.
The CNC Remote app on a Mac can also drive a machine plugged into that Mac, with nothing else to install; your iPhone and iPad then connect to that Mac. Use one or the other, not both.
Windows
- Download CNCRemote Server for Windows (Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit).
- Run the downloaded setup and accept the administrator prompt. If Windows SmartScreen warns about an unrecognised app, click More info, then Run anyway.
- Keep Start the server with Windows checked and finish. Its icon appears next to the clock.
- Plug your machine into the PC with its USB cable, then open CNC Remote: the PC appears in the list.
The setup lets the app reach the server through the Windows firewall. The icon shows the server's state with a dot: green when it runs. Its menu restarts the server, opens the pairing window, shows the logs and quits.
Linux
On Debian 12 or later, Ubuntu 24.04 or later, or Raspberry Pi OS (64-bit):
- On the computer connected to your machine, open a terminal.
- Paste this command and press Enter. Type your password if asked.
curl -fsSL https://update.cncremote.pierreramoin.com/install.sh | sh - When it finishes, open CNC Remote: the computer appears in the list.
The server starts with the computer. Running the same command again repairs the installation. To remove it:
curl -fsSL https://update.cncremote.pierreramoin.com/install.sh | sh -s -- --uninstall
Pairing your devices
Your iPhone, iPad or Mac must be on the same network as the server. Open CNC Remote, choose the server in the list and pair.
- The first device pairs on its own: pairing stays open until a device has paired.
- Later devices are approved from a device already paired, or pair while the pairing window is open: choose Open pairing window from the server's icon, then pair within 2 minutes.
- On a Raspberry Pi with no paired device at hand, unplug the Pi and plug it back in: pairing is open for 10 minutes.
Paired devices are told about every new one.
Updates
The app tells you when a new version of CNCRemote Server is available and, in most cases, installs it for you. When the computer needs an administrator password, install the new version by hand, as the first time: your paired devices are kept.
The server does not show up?
- Check that the computer next to your machine is on, that CNCRemote Server is running on it, and that it is on the same network as your device.
- On a Mac, allow CNCRemote Server to find devices on your local network (System Settings › Privacy & Security › Local Network).
- More answers in the FAQ, or contact support.
